Alain Perez and Sale Stojanovic, owners and founders of 3B Productions, hit the drawing board four years ago with the intent to merge fashion with music and give it a South Beach twist. Funkshion: Fashion Week Miami Beach was the result, and it's grown from a three-day event to a weeklong, biannual catwalk strut featuring the collections of established and emerging designers from around the world.
Events were held at the Paris Studios in Miami Beach, where fashionistas from design students to Baby Phat, Sisley, and Julian Chang previewed their collections before hundreds of guests. The small locale meant only the main sponsors of the show, Lexus, Icon Brickell Condominiums, and Perrier, could set up displays in the venue. Additional sponsors were promoted more heavily in the event's invitations, programs, and other marketing materials.
Michael Designs built the runway on the lower level of the studio, where a constant rotation of fashion shows engaged guests, buyers, and editors from 7 PM to 10 PM every night (with the exception of the shows that began fashionably late, of course). Highlights included the opening night, hosted by Harper's Bazaar en Español; shows by Stella McCartney, Carolina Herrera, and Yves Saint Laurent; and the Thursday night mini-concert by Cindy Blackman, former drummer for Lenny Kravitz.
The week ended not in South Beach, but at the sales center for Icon condominiums on Brickell Avenue downtown. EventStar erected a 50- by 130-foot tent near the shore to house the shows for Dragana Ognjenovic and DKNY. In between shows, guests sipped cocktails and nibbled on hors d' oeuvres such as cucumber wrapped scallops, teriyaki chicken, and coconut shrimp from CuisineWorks. The glow of lanterns and the cool bayside breeze provided a sophisticated ending to a week filled with cutting-edge designs.
