We’ve already shared our own coverage of last night’s MuchMusic Video Awards and all the related hoopla, but here’s a look at what the rest of the media is saying. (We’ll spare you the many, many weather-inspired “Umbrella” puns in honor of performer Rihanna.)
The Canadian Press lamented the lack of outrageous behavior, blaming it on the rain. Reporter Lee-Anne Goodman made specific mention of the absence of crowd flashing during the arrivals and the rushed red carpet eliminating the possibility for embarrassing interviews. She went so far as to dub the storm “a major party pooper.”Music critic Ben Rayner from The Toronto Star also had a hard time getting over the weather, mentioning “the biggest, coldest raindrops of which the mind can conceive.” Inside the venue, Toronto native Skye Sweetnam told him the downpour nixed her plans to traverse the red carpet on the same tractor she rode in her nominated video, “Human.”
The Toronto Sun’s Rita Demontis peeked inside the award’s V.I.P. gift lounge this weekend and got the lowdown on all of the swag the stars received backstage. This year marked the fourth in a row that New York’s On 3 Productions ran the suite, and co-founder Samantha Haft spoke about making their offerings as luxurious as possible while maintaining a Canadian identity in all of the brands and designers up for grabs.
Perez Hilton took his traveling “One Night” party to Toronto for an MMVA after-party at Revival, with a performance by Simple Plan. Coverage of the party, out of laziness or in tribute to its host, seems to be limited to paparazzi shots and childish captions. Perez himself picked up on all the mentions of his appearance as presenter and shared some gossip about a backstage tiff between New Kids on the Block and The Office star Rainn Wilson.
