Block Party

To inaugurate its new HD television studio, the Score hosted a street party at King and Peter with soccer demonstrations, a mechanical bull ride, and performances by bands like the Trews, Inner City Surfers, and Kardinal Offishal.

Rather than celebrate its 10th anniversary, network executives for 11-year-old sports channel the Score decided to hold off on throwing a party until they could unveil the new HD studio. Hundreds of sports fans attended the unveiling and street party Saturday at the corner of King and Peter streets to fete the network’s new home.

“We’ve been essentially operating out of a phone booth for years, and this is the next level,” said Brendan Fyfe, director of product development at the Score. “We decided we wanted to do something to show who we are. And something for our partners and fans who have watched us grow from a small network to what we are today.”

About 350 V.I.P. guests attended a private party on the studio's fourth floor balcony while officials closed the streets below for a block in each direction so hundreds of fans could enjoy a beer garden, play video games, watch soccer trick demonstrations, and ride a giant Schick razor.

The Score broadcast live from the event—planned by Krista Slack + Associates—at 7 p.m. The party, which started at 4 p.m. and continued until 10 p.m., featured appearances by Toronto Raptor Jermaine O’Neal, WWE wrestlers CM Punk and Natalya, hockey legend Wendel Clark, and Olympic gold medalist Donovan Bailey. Bands including The Trews and Inner City Surfers performed on a stage set up outside the studio. Kardinal Offishal, DJ Darrin Pfeiffer from the band Goldfinger, and DJ Dopey also entertained the crowd.

The Toronto Sun sponsored the event.
