Something Very Fishy Happened at This Toronto Gala

The Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation employed an indoor fishing pond, a pop-up bait shop, and more fishy tropes at a recent gala.

June 5, 2013

On May 15, the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation hosted a gala that paid tribute to one of the city's most distinguished medical professionals, Dr. J. Bernard Gosevitz. But it was clear from the name, "A Tribute to Dr. G," that the evening at the Carlu would pay a fond, irreverent sort of homage to Gosevitz. And indeed, the event celebrated some lighthearted aspects of the doctor's personality while raising some $2.6 million for the Campaign to Cure Arthritis.

For starters, the evening's attire was "business with colorful socks," which nodded to Bernard's fondness for flamboyant footwear. Then there was the event's laid-back theme, based on one of the doctor's most cherished activities. From plates decked with seaweed to an on-site bait shop and an indoor fishing pond, take a look at how organizers brought a "gone fishin'" vibe to a high-end gala.

Fishy bites from 10Tation Catering included cedar-smoked salmon with goat cheese, capers, and onions wrapped around homemade breadsticks. As though washed up from the sea, the appetizers were plated beside a tangle of seaweed and a plastic fish.

Bright, striped pillows from Ikea decked the reception area. The pillows were inspired by Dr. G's signature sartorial choice: He always wears colorful patterned socks, and they don't always match.
