March 20, 2015: TED Conference to Stay in Vancouver, H&M's Tech Plans for Coachella, Glastonbury Fans Protest Kanye

1. TED TO STAY IN VANCOUVER: The TED Conference’s second run in Vancouver wraps up today, and TED curator Chris Anderson says he wants to keep the buzzy gathering in the Canadian city for the “foreseeable future.” The Globe and Mail: “‘When we first came, it was an experiment. We were hopeful of it. We weren’t certain if the community would embrace it and if the theatre would work,’ he said. ‘But the reaction to last year, which was overwhelmingly positive, convinced us we should make this our home.’ Mr. Anderson says the thing that seemed the biggest obstacle to TED working out in Vancouver—the lack of a theatre in which to hold the talks—has turned out to be one of the greatest factors in its success. TED commissioned the design and construction of a pop-up theatre which can be dismantled and reassembled again the next year, which Mr. Anderson says ‘actually turned into the best theatre we could imagine.’ It’s designed to be re-installable at least 10 times.” http://bit.ly/1BadhoN

2. H&M BRINGING INTERACTIVE TECH TO COACHELLA: Next month H&M will merge retail with technology in its tent at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The retailer, a returning sponsor of the Indio, California, music festival, is not only creating an exclusive collection to be sold at its pop-up shop, but it will also have virtual reality and other interactive opportunities for guests. WWD: "The rest of the retailer’s tent—dubbed 'Transformation'—contains heavy technology, including a 360-degree selfie station and a scanner that produces photos claiming to capture a person’s aura. Festivalgoers can also use their bodies to create music via an installation from digital artist Aaron Sherwood and participate in a virtual reality experience using technology from Nanotronics and Oculus Rift, the Irvine, Calif.-based firm bought by Facebook last year for $2 billion." http://bit.ly/1x8f0zv

3. GLASTONBURY FANS PROTEST KANYE: Fans of the Glastonbury Festival have started a petition asking organizers to remove Kanye West from the lineup. CNN: "‘Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world,’ [Neil] Lonsdale says in the change.org petition. ‘We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment.’ The petition urges West to ‘pass his headline slot on to someone deserving.’ Lonsdale is not the only music fan upset by his scheduled performance. By early Friday, the petition had nearly 80,000 signatures." http://cnn.it/1HaqkOU
