December 5, 2018: Kevin Hart to Host 91st Academy Awards, Carnegie Deli Reopens to Celebrate 'Marvelous Mrs. Masel,' Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Hits Ratings Low

1. KEVIN HART TO HOST 91ST ACADEMY AWARDS: Comedian and actor Kevin Hart will host the 91st Oscars ceremony, airing live on ABC February 24. The Hollywood Reporter: "'I will be sure to make this year's Oscars a special one,' the comedian wrote Tuesday afternoon in an Instagram post, adding, 'now it's time to rise to the occasion.' The star is emceeing the event for the first time. First-time producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss will oversee the show, with Gigliotti serving as producer and Weiss on hand as co-producer and director. Earlier on Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had held talks with the comedian about hosting the February ceremony. 'I appreciate @TheAcademy for the opportunity,' wrote Hart in his post, adding, 'For years I have been asked if I would ever host the Oscars and my answer was always the same ... I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it's suppose to.' The last two Oscar shows were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. But each year ratings declined, with a record-low 26.5 million viewers tuning in for last March’s broadcast, which adds to the pressure the new team will face in mounting the kudocast." https://bit.ly/2AS8im3

2. CARNEGIE DELI REOPENS TO CELEBRATE 'MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL': The Carnegie Deli in New York has reopened to celebrate the premiere of the second season of the Amazon comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The iconic deli, which closed in 2016 after four decades, will be open for the week. Page Six: "Mimicking the world of the hit period comedy, the downtown pop-up looks like a 1950s deli, and items are priced appropriately, with sandwiches, named after characters from the show, going for 99 cents. (The former menu was known for behemoth sandwiches that shared names with stars, such as the 4-inch-thick pastrami-and-corned-beef Woody, named after director Woody Allen.) All funds and tips go to the Lower Eastside Girls Club. There are 6,000 people on the waitlist to get into the place, which is running through Saturday. But Joshua Greenberg, the executive producer of the pop-up, told Page Six TV that the hot spot could keep going if New Yorkers show up. ... The spot’s signature sandwich, the Maisel, is for 'women who eat, not ladies who lunch.'" https://pge.sx/2KWRmQ6

3. VICTORIA'S SECRET FASHION SHOW HITS RATINGS LOW: No stranger to negative publicity and reviews, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show can now put its ratings in the same category. The telecast, which aired Sunday on CBS, garnered 3.27 million viewers—its smallest audience since 2001. The event has lost more than half its audience in two years. Associated Press: "The runway-style show of models in underwear has seemed ill-suited to the #MeToo era and was hurt when the company’s head of marketing said in an interview that it would not include transgender or plus-sized models because Victoria’s Secret was selling a fantasy. The company later apologized. After one year on ABC in 2001, the show migrated to CBS. Its viewership ranged from a high of 10.3 million in 2011 to 7.36 million in 2016, Nielsen said. Last year, however, the viewership tumbled to 5.37 million, leading to its departure to ABC. A review of Sunday’s show in the Washington Post was headlined, 'The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is too boring to even argue about.' 'The whole hourlong shindig was a bore,' wrote fashion critic Robin Givhan. 'A snooze. A shrug. Oh, my Lord, it was dull.' Givhan wrote that the TV special 'was such a nonevent of excruciating cliches and non-sexiness that it’s not worth a cultural revolution. It’s a teardown. Or we could all just get out of the way and let it rot until it falls down on its own.' There’s no immediate word from ABC about whether it will return. Even with its sinking ratings, the show got about twice as many viewers as Alec Baldwin’s Sunday-night talk show, which aired in the same time slot until it was recently moved to Saturday nights." https://bit.ly/2QCz1gn
