Catering to design-conscious travelers, boutique hotels are cropping up all over New York. Not all are as pricey as they are stylish, and these three new properties offer affordable rooms within easy reach of Midtown.
1. Opening in March, the Ace Hotel New York is the first Manhattan outpost from the Portland, Oregon-based Ace Hotel Group. Situated at 29th Street and Broadway, the site was designed by Roman & Williams. Each of the 247 rooms sports a mixture of vintage furnishings, chalkboard walls, and music records. The hotel will also offer a restaurant from the owners of the Spotted Pig and 2,800 square feet of event and meeting space. Rates start at $99.
2. Last year, Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson—the duo behind the Maritime and Bowery Hotels—finished a restoration to a West Village building and reopened it as the Jane Hotel. Just south of the Meatpacking district's collection of bars, restaurants, and shops, the Jane also offers waterfront views of the Hudson River. However, with 200 small rooms—modeled after old train cabins and furnished with bunk beds—this location is suited to a younger crowd. Rates start at $99.
3. Billed as Brooklyn's first boutique property, the Nu Hotel has only 93 rooms and sits just blocks from a downtown business and education center as well as a multitude of restaurants on Smith Street. It's also eco-friendly—there are cork floors, organic linens, and furnishings made from sustainable wood. Operated by Hersha Hospitality, which also runs the Duane Street Hotel in TriBeCa, the Nu Hotel does not have an in-house restaurant, but provides a business center as well as free Wi-Fi Internet access. Rates start at $169.
