Chicago Chosen as Candidate City for 2016 Olympics

Today in Athens, the International Olympic Committee selected Chicago as a finalist city to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The announcement took place as part of SportAccord, an international sports convention. A delegation from Chicago 2016, the city's official Olympic bid organization, including Mayor Richard Daley and organization C.E.O. Pat Ryan, attended the convention and the announcement ceremony.

With its selection, Chicago now enters the international phase of the bid process and can officially add the Olympic rings to its Chicago 2016 logo. The United States Olympic Committee chose Chicago as the U.S. bid city in April 2007, and Chicago and Rio de Janeiro became the two bids from the Americas. The IOC will select the 2016 host city on October 2, 2009, in Copenhagen.

A special event is planned for Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Daley Plaza to celebrate the announcement.
