In late October, Nike started a social media campaign that encouraged athletes to take their workouts outside, despite the rapidly approaching winter weather. Fans of the brand were asked to snap photos of themselves exercising outdoors, then post the photos to various social media channels with the hashtag #GetOutHere. As a culmination of the campaign, Nike launched a cold-weather workout destination along the Chicago Riverwalk on December 9. The activation featured a showcase of Nike's cold-weather gear, along with a floating gym in a customized barge on the Chicago River. Through December 12, the barge hosted free training and running sessions led by Nike master trainers or Nike Plus Run Club coaches.
On December 12, the pop-up activation hosted the Get Out Here challenge. Some 48 competitors, who were selected based on photos they had uploaded during the #GetOutHere campaign, were flown to Chicago to compete in a difficult workout that combined elements of a track workout with a gym workout and a metabolic challenge. At the end of the grueling session, a male and female athlete were selected as the top athletes, and the duo will make other appearances at Nike events in 2016.
