The Morgans Hotel Group's new hotel residence, the Mondrian South Beach, is scheduled to debut in December 2007, but people didn't have to wait until then to preview its design and amenities. The company hosted a chic cocktail reception at its future site on Biscayne Bay for approximately 1,000 revelers, including The Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Travel & Leisure editor Nancy Novogrod, and Belkys Nerey.
Marcel Wanders, a world-famous design star and an original member of the influential Droog collective in the Netherlands, has conceived design plans with a Sleeping Beauty castle theme, and the same was done for the preview. Shades of pink and purple dominated the pool area, which featured large screens brought in by Los Angeles's Stoelt Productions to display design elements the final units will feature. Floating above the pool and in between the screens was a mobile of webbed lit spheres, an original Wanders piece. His crochet chairs also floated on the pool. Other seating included white banquettes, giving the space a sleek, monochromatic look.
Barton G. prepared a nice menu with hearty hors d'oeuvres including mini cheese burger Napoleon with crispy shallots and mango ketchup; Asian-style rice paper spring rolls with marinated vegetables; herb-encrusted Montrachet crostini with honey peppered bacon; and Spanish potato tart with Cabra cheese and tostino.
Although there was no actual art at this event, Basel goers got a dose of the performing arts, if you will, with the Happy Hour Chandelier. This featured a woman suspended from a—you guessed it—chandelier, who served champagne to those around her.
