Over a span of five weekends, South Floridians can experience a taste of the 16th century at the 16th annual Renaissance Festival at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield. Featuring an array of Renaissance-style food, music, performances, and crafts, the month long festival, produced by Bobby Rodriguez Productions, provides the community with entertainment from and education about times past.
Upon entering the festival through a castle archway, lads and ladies stroll through a crafts village, watching merchants and artisans show off and sell their wares. Guests can purchase jewelry, period costumes, swords, crossbows, and even elf ears. A variety of performers are spread across the park playing musical instruments, braiding hair, and demonstrating different skills from the era, such as igniting fire using flint and steel. In addition, skillful magicians and jousting knights are also on hand to entertain, as well as various dance troupes performing routines from various styles and cultures throughout the day. When eventgoers aren't being entertained by the various performances or purchasing crafts, they can wander over to the royal kitchen, where various booths supply foods for every palate. Delicacies such as turkey legs, scotch eggs, love knots-commonly known now as pretzels-and Queen's buns are all available. For those who enjoy cuisine of the present day, American and Cuban dishes can also be purchased.
The Florida Renaissance Festival is an active contributor to the South Florida nonprofit community, with a portion of all proceeds raised from the festival benefiting the Prestige Club, the James Jr. Fund, A Child Is Missing, and the Deerfield Chamber of Commerce.
