Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Ball

A giant Oscar statuette stood sentry at the Academy's own Governors Ball, which drew 1,500 guests after Sunday's show to the Grand Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles. Cheryl Cecchetto of Sequoia Productions led the production of the event, which offered a retooled experience Cecchetto said was intended to "energize" the room: Guests dined on more than 50 mostly tray-passed dishes from Wolfgang Puck, instead of the typical sit-down dinner.

Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Benefit

The Elton John AIDS Foundation celebrated its 20th annual viewing party at the newly redesigned West Hollywood Park, a change of venue from its usual haunt, the Pacific Design Center. Virginia Fout of V Productions produced the Los Angeles event, which this year got a blue, nautical-inspired look with design by Antony Todd. The fund-raising event took in $5.25 million, thanks in part to auction items like the opportunity to join John and husband David Furnish at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, which sold for $230,000.

Two days before the Film Independent Spirit Awards, a customs snag at the airport held up 5,000 roses flown in from Ecuador for sponsor Piaget’s backstage V.I.P. tent. The hot pink blooms eventually did arrive in time for the Saturday event in Los Angeles, where 3,500 of them covered the branded wall at the entrance.
