Mayor Michael Bloomberg is serious about getting some big events to New York: He recently appointed Maureen Reidy, the former head of the Miss Universe pageant, as executive director of the Permanent Host Committee of the city's Economic Development Corporation, according to Crain's New York. Her charge: to coordinate campaigns to attract big events to the city. Her office is currently working to persuade the 2004 Republican and Democratic national conventins, the Latin Grammys and the 2008 Super Bowl.
