In a bid to modernize the interior of the Plaza—and perhaps dispel some of the criticism the redesign has received—the owners of the 100-year-old building have tapped Frost Lighting to produce and set up a temporary lighting and video installation. Similar to what was produced at the New York Botanical Garden's ball in December, the setup involves projecting video onto scrims around the venue.
The focus of this effort is the lobby-level Palm Court, a dining spot that closed temporarily late last year. It's in this area that the lighting crew, who worked closely with architect Gal Nauer, secured several translucent white drapes in late February. Onto the surface of these the firm is projecting seasonal imagery—falling snow and cloudy skies for winter and leaves and branches for spring—all original content shot by the Frost Lighting staff.
The owners are currently seeking an operator for the eatery and plan to remove the exhibition when one is found. The area is not currently available for events.
