1. THE HALFTIME SHOW: Beyoncé earned raves from mainstream reviewers for this year's mid-game entertainment, which, as expected, included a mini reunion of her former group Destiny's Child. She appeared to be singing live—as opposed to her prerecorded inauguration performance—and included several hits during the 12-minute show. Chicago Tribune: "Beyonce affirmed that she’s the reigning all-purpose multimedia celebrity of our era, and she knows how to entertain." http://trib.in/VxNP94
How did event professionals view the halftime show? Several producers reviewed the performance for BizBash: bizba.sh/XS0LGz
2. LIGHTS OUT: A power outage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome early in the second half caused play to halt for 34 minutes. Some wondered if Beyoncé's pyrotechnics-filled halftime show contributed to the mishap. Most fans used the time to visit concession stands or the restroom, but some thought of the worst, wondering if there would be a stampede for exits. Officials also wondered if the outage would hurt the city's chance to host future Super Bowls. One city official, in a jab at next year's game at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, told the Times-Picayune that she "would rather sit through a temporary power outage than watch a three-hour game in sub-freezing temperatures." http://bit.ly/XRWmU8
3. TWEET UP: How did fans react on social media during the power outage? Heres's a sampling of tweets rounded up by Entertainment Weekly, including: "Switching to Downton Abbey where they still have electricity." http://bit.ly/VEzopd
4. AD ROUNDUP: Viewers who tuned in to the game for the ads may have been disappointed, with many missing the mark. New York Times: "The commercials that CBS broadcast nationally during the game were, by and large, disappointing. They represented a missed opportunity for marketers and agencies to demonstrate that they had at least some understanding of how contemporary consumers think and behave." Still, here are some highlights from Bud Light, M&Ms, Oreo, and Tide. http://nyti.ms/X8HySP
