June 18, 2018: 1 Dead and 22 Injured at New Jersey Art Festival, AMC's Chris Hardwick Dropped From Comic-Con Following Sexual Assault Allegations, A Record Number of Songs Compete to Be 2018 World Cup Anthems

1. 1 DEAD AND 22 INJURED AT NEW JERSEY ART FESTIVAL: Twenty-two people were injured and one gunman was killed Sunday after two men open fired at an all-night art festival in Trenton, New Jersey. Associated Press: "Of 17 people treated for gunshot wounds, four of them, including a 13-year-old boy, remain in critical condition late Sunday morning, said Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri. The shots rang out around 2:45 a.m. during the Art All Night Trenton festival that showcases local art, music, food and films. Onofri said a 33-year-old man was killed, apparently by police, and the second suspect is in custody. He said a 'neighborhood beef' is behind the shooting. On Sunday, crime scene tape surrounded the site of the historic Roebling Wire Works Building that now shares a parking lot with a supermarket, bank and laundry. Police are also investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred in a nearby alley. Onofri said police are working to determine if it’s connected to the shooting. ... Theresa Brown, who has been volunteering at Art All Night for 12 years, said she was leaving her volunteer shift around 2 a.m. when she heard 'pop, pop, pop. I thought it was a car backfiring,' she said. The remainder of the two-day festival has been cancelled. 'We’re very shocked. We’re deeply saddened. Our hearts ache and our eyes are blurry but our dedication and resolve to building a better Trenton through community, creativity and inspiration will never fade. Not tonight. Not ever,' festival organizers posted on social media Sunday." https://bit.ly/2K1lqf6

2. AMC'S CHRIS HARDWICK DROPPED FROM COMIC-CON FOLLOWING SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS: Chris Hardwick, co-creator of Nerdist and host of AMC's Talking with Chris Hardwick, has been dropped from Comic-Con International follow allegations of sexual assault by his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra. Hardwick was slated to moderate panels for AMC and BBC America. Entertainment Weekly: "AMC announced the news in an official statement issued on Saturday in response to the allegations of sexual assault and emotional abuse against Hardwick that surfaced yesterday. The statement also confirmed that the second season of Talking With Chris Hardwick, which was set to premiere this Sunday night with guest Donald Glover, would be pulled from broadcast as the situation continues to unfold. 'We have had a positive working relationship with Chris Hardwick for many years,' reads the statement. 'We take the troubling allegations that surfaced yesterday very seriously. While we assess the situation, ‘Talking with Chris Hardwick’ will not air on AMC, and Chris has decided to step aside from moderating planned AMC and BBC America panels at Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.' Hardwick had been set to moderate the Doctor Who panel at this year’s SDCC, as well as to moderate the Hall H return of The Walking Dead. ... Backlash against the Nerdist co-founder has been swift since a Medium essay titled 'Rose-Colored Glasses: A Confession,' written by his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra, was posted Thursday. In the heartbreaking and disturbing piece, she details the repeated abuse she suffered at the hands of an unnamed ex-boyfriend, many of whom believe to be Hardwick. The piece describes a boyfriend more than a decade older than Dykstra and who went 'from a mildly successful podcaster to a powerhouse CEO of his own company.' (Nerdist first found life as a podcast, with Hardwick eventually rising to CEO of Nerdist Industries.) During the relationship, she describes a partner who intensely restricted her drinking, actions in public, and sexual autonomy." https://bit.ly/2JMfYO4

3. A RECORD NUMBER OF SONGS COMPETE TO BE 2018 WORLD CUP ANTHEMS: The World Cup is always an opportune moment for artists to launch new music. And for this year's tournament, which runs through July 15, more artists than ever before are launching new music in hopes of having a World Cup anthem, thanks to the help of streaming services. Billboard: ""There are more songs than ever," says Dusko Justic, vp international marketing and partnerships for Sony Latin/Iberia Brands. "Media partners see the power of the music, and everyone is deciding to create their own representation of the song." Sony Music Entertainment's artists have long had an advantage, since Sony has been FIFA's official anthem partner for many years: The label released the official 2018 World Cup song, 'Live It Up,' performed by Nicky Jam, Will Smith and Era Istrefi and produced by Diplo, who owns a stake in the Phoenix Rising soccer club. Sony also released longtime World Cup sponsor Coca-Cola's official track, 'Colors,' by Jason Derulo featuring Maluma, as well as Sprint's song, '90 Minutos,' by Prince Royce featuring ChocQuibTown. But streaming services are expanding the playing field: Spotify is promoting World Cup playlists for individual countries as well as a video series highlighting fans and artists in four team markets, while Deezer, which already had deals in place with Manchester United and FC Barcelona, has added 32 playlists from artists representing the 32 World Cup countries. 'In the World Cup, the barrier for non-English artists and songs is broken down,' says Sulinna Ong, Global VP/Artist Marketing at Deezer, noting that J Balvin is Deezer's most streamed artist currently. 'We see the dominance of Latin artists and Latin songs, and visitors are revisiting past World Cup songs as well.'" https://bit.ly/2leYc7p
