Ladies in ruffled dresses and men in loud pants and guayabera shirts invaded the Museum of the City of New York for its A Hot Night in Havana summer party. Approximately 800 of the museum's junior supporters turned out for the Cuban-themed fund-raiser, which was hosted by the Director's Council and organized by Lissa Martin, the museum's new special events manager.
Thomas Anderson designed the fun, festive decor that filled the interior of the museum and the tented areas in the gardens. Two large neon pink flamingos designed by Anderson and manufactured by Midtown Neon decorated the entrance, and small pink flamingo statues were placed in the garden's greenery. Inside the museum, faux birds filled white bird cages suspended from the ceilings and cocktail tables were covered with festive, tropical-colored tablecloths from Quadrille Wallpaper and Fabrics. Centerpieces consisted of pineapples, bananas, mangoes and other tropical fruits.
For entertainment, Cuban band Son d'Madre played and dancers from Piel Canela Dancers danced in the rotunda; both were booked by Blue Rabbit Productions. Catered by Mosaico, the event's menu included a savory salmon tartare on yucca chips and Cubano sandwich cigars (pork, ham, cheese, pickles and garlic sauce rolled in a wheat tortilla) in authentic Cuban cigar boxes.
