February 13, 2015: Democrats Choose Philadelphia for Convention, Are Online-Only Shareholders' Meetings Good for Investors?, Nike’s All-Star Weekend Activation Celebrates Michael Jordan

1. DEMOCRATS CHOOSE PHILADELPHIA FOR CONVENTION: The Democratic National Committee picked Philadelphia to host its 2016 presidential nominating convention over Brooklyn, New York, and Columbus, Ohio. Officials estimate the convention’s economic impact on the city to reach as much as $300 million. It’s another win for the city, which will host the first visit of Pope Francis to the United States in September. Philadelphia Inquirer: “It will be the 10th major-party convention the city has hosted, dating back to the Whigs' gathering in 1848. Philadelphia last hosted a Democratic convention in 1948. This time, city leaders aggressively wooed the DNC selection committee for months, touting the city's vibrancy, history, landmarks, food, transit, and hotel capacity.” http://bit.ly/1B25i2y

2. ARE ONLINE-ONLY SHAREHOLDERS' MEETINGS GOOD FOR INVESTORS?: Hewlett-Packard announced plans to hold an online-only shareholder meeting next month, becoming the largest company to do away with the live event format. The company says the change will save money and allow for more shareholders to participate, but critics say it diminishes the ability of shareholders to interact with the C.E.O. Reuters: “Virtual shareholder meetings have been gaining traction in recent years, but still represent just a tiny fraction of the corporate universe. Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc, the main provider of systems for the online webcasts, said it had helped stage 53 online-only meetings last year, up from 35 in 2013 and 27 in 2012. Broadridge also hosts 'hybrid' annual meetings that combine the webcasts with traditional gatherings. The hybrid format is preferred by many activists, large pension funds and asset managers, because they feature CEOs facing shareholders in person, while also expanding to the virtual audience.” http://read.bi/1uOdzFm

3. NIKE’S ALL-STAR WEEKEND ACTIVATION PAYS TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JORDAN: As basketball celebrates its current stars at the N.B.A. All-Star Weekend in New York, Nike is putting retired great Michael Jordan in the spotlight, highlighting the 30th anniversary of its Jordan brand with an elaborate activation near Penn Station. The experience proved so enticing to fans that Nike stopped preregistration. Advertising Age: “The installation's main event is 'The Last Shot,' an LED simulator with 876 screens that allows fans to virtually recreate two of Michael Jordan's most iconic shots with step-by-step instructions, or freestyle, with an announcer, crowd reactions and court graphics. A personalized, inspirational quote from MJ follows each shot. (A miss prompted: 'failure makes me work even harder,' among other quotes.)” http://bit.ly/1E7bZhJ
