July 29, 2016: Facebook to Broadcast Olympic Highlights and Live Content, Snapchat Filters Take Over Philadelphia During D.N.C., Live Nation and Los Angeles Venue Operator Sued After Rave Death

1. FACEBOOK TO BROADCAST OLYMPIC HIGHLIGHTS AND LIVE CONTENT: Social media coverage of the upcoming Rio Olympics will be widespread, as NBC is slated to publish exclusive Olympic highlights to Facebook and Instagram. The network has also partnered with Facebook’s live streaming platform Facebook Live to air athlete and commentator interviews. Mashable: “Every day NBC Olympics will produce a two-minute recap video of the day's events. The videos will be available to U.S. Facebook users through NBC's Facebook page. This footage will be incorporated into primetime and late night broadcasts on NBC and Telemundo, according to the press release.’We’re excited to work with NBC Olympics to provide fans with a unique, immersive and engaging Rio 2016 experience on Facebook and Instagram,’ Facebook's Head of Global Sports Partnerships Dan Reed said in a statement. ‘Together, our platforms will provide both a front row seat and backstage pass to the biggest event of the year.’ What Facebook and Instagram users won't be able to see is a livestream of the actual competitions. NBC is limiting that access to the broadcast networks, despite Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's and COO Sheryl Sandberg's best effort to make Facebook the new TV.” http://on.mash.to/2aDhtKc

2. SNAPCHAT FILTERS TAKE OVER PHILADELPHIA DURING D.N.C.: The Democratic National Convention culminated Thursday night with Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech, and throughout the week, anyone using Snapchat in Philadelphia could use a slew of custom geofilters—some of which were paid for by Visit Philadelphia. Adweek: “Some filters are available to all users and some are only visible on snapchat-curated live stories, such as illustrations of Wednesday night's main speakers including Joe Biden, President Obama and vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine. Visit Philadelphia has designated 20 destinations with special paid geofilters throughout the week. From its own account, the official visitor website for Philly has created five Snapchat stories focused on getting word out about all the DNC-related events around the city that are open to the public. While paid national geofilters launched a year ago, On-Demand paid geofilters (which brands can design themselves) only became available in February, with prices starting at $5 and based on the size of the location and the length of time they're available. There don't seem to be any paid filters from either campaign at the DNC, but brands such as SAP have purchased them elsewhere in the city. Just last week during the GOP convention in Cleveland, the Clinton campaign bought two geofilters to troll Donald Trump at his own convention.” http://bit.ly/2aDfDJl

3. LIVE NATION AND LOS ANGELES VENUE OPERATOR SUED AFTER RAVE DEATH: The parents of a 19-year-old girl who died from a drug overdose at a rave last summer have filed a lawsuit against Live Nation and the Los Angeles County Fair Association. Los Angeles Times: Filed by Mark and Pamela Dix, the parents of Cal State Channel Islands student Katie Dix, the lawsuit accuses Live Nation and the Fair Assn. of negligence. It alleges that they should have known that the Hard Summer rave would promote “widespread illegal and illicit activity,” such as the use of banned drugs like Ecstasy. The lawsuit, filed last Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, said the defendants “breached their duties to protect” rave attendees from people distributing or consuming illegal drugs. The lawsuit also named Los Angeles County, which owns most of the fairgrounds, and the city of Pomona, as defendants. The suit accused them of negligence in creating, or allowing others to create, 'a dangerous condition of its public property.' The suit also alleges that the raves are a public nuisance and harmful to public health. County officials have said 49 people were taken by ambulance from the fairgrounds to seven emergency rooms across the region, which one official called an “unusually high number of transports” for a single event. … Representatives of Live Nation, the Fair Assn. and Los Angeles County declined to comment. A call to the Pomona city attorney’s office was not returned. A manager for a fifth defendant, Huntington Beach-based Staff Pro, which was named in the lawsuit as providing event staffing and security, declined to comment." http://lat.ms/2ak5diT
