Tourists and locals alike are patiently waiting for the Freedom Forum and Newseum Complex, located between the White House and the U.S. Capitol on the National Mall, to open this fall. The complex will feature three connected buildings, including the 250,000-square-foot, seven-story Newseum, which will have a 20,000-square-foot conference center and a 90-foot atrium. Wolfgang Puck is the exclusive caterer, and his restaurant Source by Wolfgang Puck is slated to open in November.
Two-for-One
With the opening of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture last July, two museums came together under one historic roof. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum are spread over 152,500 square feet inside a Greek revival building that is one of the oldest in D.C. The museum galleries are on three levels, and events can take place in the high-ceilinged Great Hall, which holds 360, or the elegant Luce Foundation Center, which holds 800.
Semper Fi
“Always faithful” is the Marine Corps motto, and the group now has a museum to honor its own with the opening last November of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia (just 20 miles from D.C., adjacent to the Marine Corps base). The leatherneck gallery, where planes and other Marine artifacts will be displayed, holds 1,000, while the rustic mess hall can accommodate 150 and a theater holds 93.
Space Exploration
It may be 30 miles from the District to the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, but for aeronautic fans, it’s worth the trip. Open since December 2003, the $311 million museum has an in-house flight simulator and continues to expand its collection of aviation artifacts. Events can take place beneath 127 life-size aircrafts on display in the center’s 293,000-square-foot Boeing Aviation Hangar, which holds 7,000. Also available is the 53,000-square-foot James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, which has the space shuttle Enterprise on display.
