FLOWERS

July 9, 2013
Wedding Salon Los Angeles Showcase
Wedding Salon Los Angeles Showcase
Flowers are no longer strictly contained by vessels. Sofitel Los Angeles let blooms trail from an oversize arrangement—a similar look to the Recording Academy's Bollywood-inspired after-party for the Grammys.

The 25th incarnation of I.C.F.F. ran May 18 to 21 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. A great place for event professionals to get ideas and inspiration, the show displayed items such as Toyko-based Oodesign's tiny floating vases. The vessels hold individual buds and submerge their stems in water.

Lilee Fell Flowers—a florist who is new to me, but hopefully not for long—did these arrangements at the 'Dive Into Summer' event. The whole party was so spare and chic, just the beautiful tents, simple well-placed tables, and one killer arrangement. I sometimes snicker at people carrying the arrangements home, but had I stayed for dinner I'd have had no problem knocking over a lady with a walker to get one.

Forget Me Not Flowers created a show-stopping floral display in the centre of the Windsor Arms for the annual InStyle and Hollywood Foreign Press Association Party on September 11. Roses, dahlias, and votive candles dangled from tree branches that sprouted up over a lounge area.

Each of the 400 tables had its own distinctive look with a dramatic flower arrangement from La Premier that included silver manzanita branches, calla lilies, roses, and orchids. The ballroom continually changed colors throughout the evening thanks to Images by Lighting. Irma Hardjakusumah was the technical director. In addition to Patina's dinner—a menu that included a starter of Little Gem lettuce salad, a main of filet mignon, and a dessert of Caramelia Namelaka—Marich Confectionery premium chocolates and Beaulieu Vineyard paired for a wine and chocolate section in the event space. Grey Goose poured the night's signature "Emmy" cocktail.

Dior Spring/Summer 2014
Dior Spring/Summer 2014

Ever enchanted by florals, Dior creative director Raf Simons utilized 300,000 stems of hanging foliage that included orchids, wisteria, and lianas, among others, mixed with plants both real and artificial, as his runway backdrop. The jungle-like setting, filled with tropical cascades of fabric flowers and real plants painted canary yellow, fuchsia pink, and chlorophyll green, was a nod to Dior’s many links to nature. In total, 48,438 square feet of decor—32,292 square feet of walls plus 16,146 square feet of roofs—was used.

7 Ways Event Planners Can Navigate the Current Flower Shortage
Struggling farms, supply chain slowdowns and an influx of rescheduled events have created a ‘perfect storm’ in the floral industry. Here’s what event planners should consider as they vet floral vendors right now.
“The floral industry is in a really unique space right now,” explain Danielle Flores-Gary and Katie Hartman, co-owners of Floral Crush, a Los Angeles-based floral design studio that has worked on high-profile events for clients like Event Eleven, Gina Wade Creative and NBCUniversal. Here’s what floral designers are working with this season.
“Dried flowers are coming back this year after a long hiatus. They will be popular for design due to their longevity, deep rich colors and added visual texture. Among the many popular dried flowers making a comeback are mini pampas grass, star grass, avena and helichrysum, which will be a popular species that designers are leaning towards integrating into arrangements with live flowers.” —Seth Pearsoll, director of design, shows and events for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (Pictured: The Samantha from East Olivia's spring collection)
