How ESPN Rose to the Occasion with Intricate Floral Installations to Celebrate the NBA Finals

Mr. Flower Fantastic replicated the iconic logos of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers out of flowers in the lead-up to the NBA Finals.

The 79th edition of the NBA championship ended in victory for the Oklahoma City Thunder after the team defeated the Indiana Pacers 103-91 in Game 7.

In the lead-up to the record-breaking win (it was the Thunder's first NBA title since relocating from Seattle in 2008), ESPN celebrated the NBA Finals with an immersive experience dubbed “Blooming Intro Greatness” that appeared outside of both the Thunder’s home at the Paycom Center and the Pacers’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse ahead of Game 1 and Game 3, respectively.

Both pop-ups featured towering floral sculptures of each franchise’s logo—welcoming fans to “give their team their flowers” by adding blooms to help complete the art installation.

The experience was spearheaded by ESPN, which tapped the enigmatic New York-based floral artist Mr. Flower Fantastic to build out the intricate floral display. Mr. Flower Fantastic was on site at each pop-up, donning his signature all-black jumpsuit and respirator mask as he misted flowers.

“We wanted to think of a fun way to celebrate the NBA Finals fandom and give fans an opportunity to honor their teams in a unique way with a bold, immersive experience,” says Sereita N. Cobbs, ESPN’s senior director of fan experiences and community-building events.

'Hundreds of fans stopped by the installation to take photos,' Cobbs said, attributing such an impressive turnout to the installation's 'prime location' outside of the stadium.

'Fans were lining up to see us unveil each of the installations and couldn’t get enough photos once we were live,' Cobbs said, referencing the floral pop-ups' appearance at the Oklahoma City Thunder's Paycom Center and the Pacers’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse ahead of Game 1 and Game 3, respectively.

The floral Pacers icon stood seven feet tall by seven feet wide. 'Every floral detail was intentional, with each bloom chosen to reflect the resilience and perseverance of its respective city,' Cobbs explained.

Fans were able to take home their own flowers from the display, supporting ESPN's mission in putting on the pop-up 'to create experiences that bring fans closer to the sports, stories, and communities they love,' Cobbs said.

A similar floral installation from Mr. Flower Fantastic appeared outside of the Oklahoma City Thunder's hub at the Paycom Center on June 5. The greatest challenge? "We did not know the teams that would be in the NBA Finals until just a few days before we were set to go live," Cobbs said. So, in order to bring the pop-up to life, "Mr. Flower Fantastic drove from New York City [his home base] to Oklahoma City to Indianapolis with the sculptures and put the final touches on overnight."

Fans played a hands-on role in completing the installation, adding blooms to their team’s logo—a playful and heartfelt nod to the phrase, 'give their team their flowers.'
