For the Casita Maria Fiesta benefit dinner at the Plaza, Philip Baloun Designs brought in 32 wrought iron French votive trees in place of floral centerpieces. Each custom-made tree featured vines and ambiance roses wrapped around its trunk, and 24 votive candles in glass containers were suspended on the branches of each tree. More votives were placed on the table among scattered red and yellow rose petals.
According to Tom Noel of Philip Baloun, the decor scheme for Casita Maria's annual benefit is usually more festive and flamboyant with a bright, vibrant color palette. But in the wake of the September 11 attacks, the decor was toned down significantly to be more simple and elegant, with less showy flowers and tons of candles to give a feeling of peace. Casita Maria is a nonprofit settlement house that serves the Hispanic communities in the South Bronx and Harlem. Approximately 300 guests attended the event.
