The crowd assembled at Thursday's premiere party for the screening of Ben and Casey Affleck’s new film, Gone Baby Gone, could have felt they were partying with purpose, since the event was cosponsored by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (the nonprofit consulted on the film). Capitol File magazine joined the center and Miramax in showcasing the movie, which Ben directed; brother Casey plays a police officer investigating a kidnapping. After the screening at the AMC Loews Georgetown, where the popcorn and M&Ms were gratis, the crowd of 250 moved a block away to the City Tavern Club, a private venue with all the genteel hallmarks of a classic Georgetown mansion—antiques, brocade curtains, and glittery chandeliers.Capitol File associate publisher Jayne Sandman said the trick was to combine the historic backdrop with modern touches to keep the event from feeling stuffy, since the movie’s serious topic didn’t lend itself to a distinct and festive party theme. “We’re honoring the surroundings while also making it modern and fun,” she said. Contemporary flower arrangements, lots of simple votive candles, and blowups of the movie poster freshened up the stately digs. A smoking lounge on the patio out back took the glam theme even further, with leopard-print tablecloths and flower arrangements tucked into cigar boxes.
Gala Events’ Jamie Greenwald handled production, decor, and floral arrangements, while catering by local restaurant Teatro Goldoni gave minglers some vegan options, per the dietary needs of the movie’s leading man. “Casey is a vegan, which made my life interesting when it came to finding really tasty hors d’oeuvres,” Sandman said. But the night’s stars seemed too busy chatting with guests and posing for pictures to enjoy the meatless fare, which included bites of beet tartare.
