Suitable for thank-you gifts, centerpieces, or any occasion when you might need a floral arrangement, Alive Planters are filled with low-maintenance succulents, saxifrages, and alpine flowers. Created by Alive Structures, a Long Island City-based company specializing in rooftop gardens and landscape design, the planters are like miniature versions of the firm's large-scale projects. The containers measure about one square foot and are made from recycled materials, like paper and styrofoam mixed with cement. Plants are chosen based on whether the planter will be displayed indoors or outdoors; the company says the goal is for the plants to last and not become a disposable object. Each planter retails for $120, and orders of 20 or more cost $80 each. Alive Structures is currently taking orders for deliveries beginning on Earth Day, April 22. Delivery is available throughout the five boroughs, or the planters can be picked up at Alive Structures's office.
