Magazine publisher Gruner & Jahr relaunched its newly redesigned Child magazine at the FAO Schwarz store on Fifth Avenue. The so-called "World of Toys" hosted hundreds of media and advertising folks, who were invited to bring their children to the family-themed event. Other guests included Jane Pauley and Liam Aiken, the child star of Julia Roberts'Stepmom and the upcoming Keanu Reeves film Sweet November.
Guests in the carnivalesque atmosphere were surrounded by thousands of toys and sugar-rushed children ("More ice cream, sweetie?") stuffing themselves with kiddie finger-foods such as hot dogs, cotton candy, licorice, popcorn and pretzels. Adult partygoers also enjoyed an array of hors d'oeuvres, champagne, wine and beer. Catering was by Great Performances.
Entertainers from the Big Apple Circus and Broadway shows Annie Get Your Gun, The Music Man and Les Miserables performed on a stage just below the towering robot elevator. And store staff members were on hand to demonstrate toys and ring up purchases for the more indulgent parents. The decor? Sanrio, Hasbro, Mattel, Playskool and other name-brand toy manufacturers provided the festive backdrop.
