Cocktail dresses and suits were replaced with fuzzy animal slippers and flannel pajamas at the launch party for Zagat Survey's Top International Hotels, Resorts & Spas at the Hudson Hotel. More than 200 guests braved the snow and ice to attend the party, hosted by Zagat founders Nina and Tim Zagat. The hotel loaned white terry cloth bathrobes to guests who didn't come dressed for bed (like Mayor Rudolph Giuliani), and partygoers included Judith Nathan, David Lauren, Jeffrey Toobin, Jonathan Tisch and Cafe des Artistes owner George Lang.
The event was organized and publicized by Zagat's Michelle Lehmann and her corporate communications staff. The room glowed with long fluorescent fuschia lights that ran along the ceiling and white votive candles placed throughout the space. Small Zagat branding cards were placed on all of the cocktail tables, and a large blow-up of the cover of the guide was propped up in the back of the room behind the speaking area.
Great Performances provided passed hors d'oeuvres and a cheese table with crackers, breads and fruit, and guests were offered milk and cookies as they departed. The Zagats concluded the evening with a raffle that featured prizes including a Diane von Furstenberg chemise and multiple-night stays at some of the top-rated hotels and resorts in the world, all featured in the guide.
