The Lobby Cafe & Bar at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. just got a modern makeover. Previously a traditional leather-and-wood lounge, the café, which reopens tomorrow, has doubled its seating, to 44 in the café and 17 in the bar, and lightened its decor, with lime green and taupe hues now dominating the space.
The change is part of the Ritz's $12 million general expansion, which is still underway. "The old lounge was much more masculine, with dark wood and low leather seats, which is great for lounging but not conducive for eating," said hotel manager Kari Koskela. "So [interior designer] Frank Nicholson transformed the room to make it more inviting for daytime use. It's now a more bright and airy environment."Upholstered wall panels are set between the original wood molding, while green glass chandeliers accent the ceiling and sofa chairs wrap each table. The space also includes a new massive booth, which seats 20, along one wall.
The Ritz brought on a new chef, David Serus, who is incorporating on the menu his take on the classics, including tuna nicoise salad and flat-iron steak and frites. He'll add seasonal dishes as well.
Full buyouts of the entire 1,400-square-foot space are available, but the furniture (much of which is heavy, including black and gray granite tables) cannot be removed.
