Tuesday night’s Capitol File magazine event at the new multipurpose venue Park at Fourteenth was all about cover girl Mira Sorvino. At least that’s what dad Paul Sorvino told the crowd of 600, who gathered for the kickoff of the magazine’s holiday issue.
“Tonight is my daughter’s night,” Paul said. His appearance at the party was a surprise for Mira. While en route from New York, Niche Media C.E.O. Jason Binn had his private jet make a pit stop in Pennsylvania to pick up the actor. But Sorvino had to show some Goodfellas attitude to get the chatty crowd’s attention. “I don’t want to give any individual beatings unless I have to,” he joked. His luck didn’t get any better when the microphone went on and off as he sang “If I Loved You” (from the musical Carousel) for his daughter. And Mira’s microphone also turned off as she spoke about human rights in Darfur, an issue that the Harvard grad has lobbied for on behalf of Amnesty International.
Despite the sound difficulties, both Sorvinos gamely joined the rest of the guests on the packed first floor of the lounge, where partygoers drank Level vodka martinis, nibbled on sliders, blackened salmon bites, and mini crab cakes, and perused copies of the magazine, which were placed throughout the space.
Although the party was a celebration of Capitol File's holiday issue, associate publisher Jayne Sandman, who planned the event, went minimal on the Christmas-themed decor, relying instead on the dramatic design of the venue. “We wanted to let the club shine,” Sandman said, noting the venue’s design elements, such as slate walls, wood paneling, and metallic tabletops. A few simple holiday details did pop up throughout the space, however, with amaryllis bulbs placed on coffee tables and greenery hung on the railing of the dramatic second-story balcony.
