What an Edible Salad Mural Looks Like

The 2015 Wall Ball was catered by Catering by Design, which created a mural wall of leafy greens that was later used for guests to make their own salads.

The 2015 Wall Ball gave its 700-some guests an opportunity to make their own salad by ordering from a salad mural. Held on May 21 at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia and produced by Bread & Butter Productions, the annual fund-raiser supports the City of Mural Arts Program, which advocates community-focused public art that includes mural-making projects and educational programs.

Complementing the event's artistic roots and inspired by the idea of a mural depicting community gardens, Catering by Design created a mural wall of salad greens. Using an existing railed platform in the center of the event space, the company's design division built a fitted frame and covered it with aluminum mesh. As guests arrived, men dressed as painters built the wall with baby heads of lettuce including Boston Bibb, Lolo Rosso, and green and red oak leaf lettuce. At a predesignated time, the costumed painters used garden shears to collect the lettuce, which was transferred to clear paint cans that were hung from Manzanita branches. Guests were free to take a can and make their own salad from a salad bar that offered toppings including rosemary croutons, thick-cut bacon, golden beets, and white balsamic vinaigrette.

In its 11th year, the event raised more than $550,000.
