Manhattan Beach Opens the Shade

The 38-room Shade Hotel opened in November, making it the first boutique hotel in Manhattan Beach. Some guest rooms feature fireplaces—not that you’d need them in the mild climate—as well as balconies, spa tubs, and ambient lighting that allows guests to change the rooms' color. The property also offers five suites. Shade offers a poolside private club called Skydeck, as well the Zinc bar, which serves tapas too and features a terrace that holds 40 for a reception. A boardroom holds 30 theater-style, four breakout rooms each have space for eight, and a petite sundeck holds 24 for a reception. And the hotel’s signature event venue, the Courtyard, is an open-air space that offers lots of natural light and holds 120 for a reception. —Alesandra Dubin
