In California, pot smoking generally happens covertly in the corner at parties—not right out in the open. But for the season premiere of Weeds, Showtime’s attention-getting comedy about a surburban mom’s drug dealing habit, marijuana was the focal point, natch.Following a screening at the Egyptian Theatre, 700 guests made their way to Ren Mar Studios, where the show is filmed, so they could walk around the set. (The soundstage remained in its pre-wrap state.)
The after-party took place in a three-pronged area outside. A steel band entertained guests in one section, while real grass sod covered the second section to make it feel like a picnic area. Nearby, a 17-foot-by-25-foot truss housed a dance floor and a stage with a reggae band. In a nod to the show, the third area resembled a hydroponic grow room. Blackburst projected gobos of pot leaves around the space. Showtime director of special events Brad Setting oversaw the party.
