With so many eco-friendly events on the calendar, it’s easy being green this Oscar season. Global Green USA’s eco-friendly cause drew a crowd to the Avalon for the nonprofit org’s third annual event that combines live music and organic wares, right down to the drinks and food. The event kicked off Global Green’s Red Carpet/Green Cars Oscar campaign, which pairs celebrities and fuel-efficient vehicles for the Academy Awards. During the day, members of the media were invited to check out some of the cars, like the Prius Plug-In, CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, and the snazzy Tesla Roadster, an electric sports car. This year, proceeds from the pre-Oscar event will go to Sustainable Design Competition (co-chaired by Brad Pitt), which will build affordable green housing in New Orleans.
Global Green event coordinator Nina Storm said that Oscar week is the right time to get the green-living message out: “It’s the perfect time for the Hollywood community to make a statement.”
The nighttime event took over the entire building, including the Spider Club and Honey restaurant. Everything was earth-friendly, right down to the drinks and food served: the light installations made from compact fluorescent lightbulbs, the candles flickering on every table, the art hanging on the walls. Global Green’s Monica Gilchrist oversaw the construction of three vignettes—a kitchen, a living room, and a bedroom—set up in the theater’s entryway, with supplies donated by eco-friendly sponsors.
Co-chairs Leonardo DiCaprio and Penelope Cruz as well as celebrities like Orlando Bloom, James Blunt, and Petra Nemcova were whisked off the green carpet right into the Spider Club, where they lounged in two different areas: RC Green designer Robert Craymer put his sofas and dark-wood tables, all made with eco-friendly fabrics and finishes, in the main room, and Kelly LaPlante of Organic Interior Design assembled carpet tiles, couches, artwork and tables on the balcony. LaPlante used simple black-and-white labels with messages like “This Candle is Green” and “This Table is Green” to get her point across. Ticket holders who shelled out $1,000 got to hang out in the V.I.P. areas, and the Avalon kitchen provided organic hors d’oeuvres.
A live performance by Maroon 5 was the night’s main event; afterward, DJ Paul Oakenfold kept the dance floor packed until 2 AM. Upstairs at the Spider Club, an after-hours party featured live music from Blackcowboy. Later, Maroon 5 took to the Spider stage for an impromptu jam session.
