The AT&T National officially kicks off on Wednesday at Bethesda's Congressional Country Club—a par-72 course covering 7,255 yards. D.C.'s tournament, from July 2 to 6, debuted last year to benefit the Tiger Wood Foundation, replacing the former Booz Allen Classic, and includes a $6 million purse with more than $1 million for the winning share. Although Woods himself will be absent from the roster to undergo surgery on his left knee, the golf star has tentative plans to make an appearance.
Last year the tournament saw more than 140,000 spectators (with tickets starting at $25); they included 30,000 members of the military (who receive complimentary passes), 2,000 volunteers, and 100 sponsors, such as Chevron, CVS, and BearingPoint Consulting. The event also brought an estimated $100 million in related revenue to the region.
Among the 120 players committed this year are defending champion KJ Choi, Rocco Mediate, Anthony Kim, Stuart Appleby, and Zach Johnson. AT&T National will also host a private congressional pro-am today, as well as a professional practice day on Tuesday.
