THIS WEEK'S CALENDAR:
WEDNESDAY: ISES L.A. chapter board installation and awards
FRIDAY: London Olympics Opening Ceremony
* INCOMING *
1. A DARK WEEKEND: Warner Brothers cancelled the Paris premiere of The Dark Knight Rises and all media appearances following the mass shooting Friday at an Aurora, Colorado, showing of the film. Police in New York and Los Angeles increased patrols at movie theaters over the weekend to prevent copycat crimes, and movie studios agreed not to publicly release box office figures (although sources told The New York Times that the film earned about $162 million in North America this weekend, a strong figure but short of the $190 million expected before the tragedy). Warner Brothers has not announced its plans for scheduled premieres this week in Tokyo and Mexico City. http://nyti.ms/NDWSof
2. N.F.L. COMES TO YOUR PHONE: As high-definition TVs have made it almost more comfortable to watch professional football from home, the N.F.L. is going up with new ways to encourage fans to attend games. Mashable: "The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled this week a new addition to their team app that will add a host of supplementary content for season ticket holders who hover their smartphones over game passes. Each game will feature a different combination of highlights, previews, messages from players and analysis, according to the team. Videos will be able to be played with the tickets in the actual background for an augmented reality effect, or fans can opt to simply watch on fullscreen. The Eagles say its the first time such technology has been used for NFL tickets, and developed the feature in partnership with the augmented reality company Aurasma." http://on.mash.to/PuUBw7
3. OLYMPIC PIRATES: With NBC streaming 3,500 hours of Olympic programming, then network is taking precautions against piracy of the content. AdWeek: "A frictionless user experience will keep viewers engaged legally. So NBC's authentication process needs to be simple and reliable. 'There is going to be a certain amount of piracy no matter what,' Felman notes. 'The best way to thwart that behavior is to anticipate consumer consumption paths and make it easy for consumers to access your content legally." http://bit.ly/NNQuIe
4. ULTIMATE WEDDING SEASON: A year later, one side effect of the legalization of gay marriage in New York is a glut of weddings that has some guests with wedding fatigue. New York Times: "At least until the backlog burns off, some of us are starting to feel like 20-something sorority sisters -- a wedding a weekend, seemingly for eternity."
5. FIERY EVENT: Firefighters treated 21 people for burns at a Tony Robbins motivational event in Southern California on Thursday after walking on hot coals. According to organizers, the coals were between 1,200 and 2,000 degrees. Robbins' organization released a statement saying it will look into ways to make the coal-walking event safer if possible: "We have been safely providing this experience for more than three decades, and always under the supervision of medical personnel," the statement said.
