1. WHAT TO EXPECT AT ARETHA FRANKLIN€'S FUNERAL: Closing out a week of tributes to the late Aretha Franklin will be the Queen of Soul’s funeral, which will be broadcast and streamed live beginning at 10 a.m. today. The daylong event will feature performers including Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Hudson. Associated Press: "The street outside Greater Grace will be lined with pink Cadillacs—a nod to Franklin’s funky ’80s tune, 'Freeway of Love,' which prominently featured the car in the lyrics and video. Her casket has been carried this week by a 1940 Cadillac LaSalle hearse that also took Franklin’s father, legendary minister C.L. Franklin, and civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks to their final resting places at Woodlawn Cemetery, where the singer will join them. 'I really believe that this ... is going to be an eye-opening experience for everybody in the world watching,' said gospel artist Marvin Sapp, also among the scheduled performers. 'We really celebrate because we really recognize that those we call the dearly departed, they wouldn’t want for us to cry and be sad and sorrowful. But they would want us to celebrate their lives because they transitioned from this life to a better one.' Sapp wouldn’t reveal what he will perform Friday, but said every song is one picked out by Franklin. Robinson also didn’t share what he will say, but that’s for a different reason. ... Sabrina Owens, Franklin’s niece, told the AP she started putting thoughts to paper about events earlier this year as her aunt’s health failed. Since Franklin’s August 16 death at 76, Owens said a close group she described as 'Aretha’s angels' have 'worked tirelessly' and have been guided by a single question: 'What would Aretha want?' 'After all she gave to the world, I felt we needed to give her an appropriate send-off that would match her legacy,' Owens said." https://bit.ly/2N6brqt
2. THIS MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL LET ATTENDEES WHO LEAVE EARLY RESELL THEIR TICKETS: Kaaboo Festival, a music festival in Southern California, has partnered with ticketing app FlipTix to allow festivalgoers to buy and sell tickets throughout the duration of the event. The new partnership is particularly geared toward attendees who leave early. Billboard: "The FlipTix platform gives people who leave the three-day festival early the chance to sell back their passes and recoup money, while others can swoop in to purchase discounted passes for the remainder of the event. 'With music festivals, one of the things that we’ve seen in the research that we’ve done is that nearly a third of all event attendees of any kind, music or sports, leave early before the end of an event. At music festivals it is a little higher than that,' FlipTix president Brian Siegel tells Billboard. Ticket holders who exit prior to the end of an event simply press 'I’m gone' in the FlipTix app, which notifies users outside the event that a ticket is available. The price of the new pass will be based on the amount of time left for the event. For example, if a fan releases a festival pass after one day of a three-day event, the new buyer will pay for roughly two days of the event instead of having to purchase a weekend pass. Sellers will receive remuneration in the form of cash, credit, merchandise, or gift cards. Buyers either pick up their activated wristband at a designated FlipTix location at the event venue or get a digital ticket delivered directly on their phone. ... Kaaboo Del Mar, which runs from September 14-16 with headliners Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, and Katy Perry, will be FlipTix's first major festival partner, but the app has been utilized at BLK Live in Scottsdale, Arizona, since June. Depending on the need of each promoter, FlipTix has been able to provide a physical presence for awareness and ticket exchange, but can also deauthorize and reissue digital tickets remotely." https://bit.ly/2PkLgK5
3. INSIDE WASHINGTON'S ANTI-TRUMP HOTEL: The Eaton DC hotel is about to open, presenting a new venue focused on community, social good, and wellness. The hotel seems to be a direct counterpart to the Trump International hotel, located six blocks away, but the hotel has been in the works since before the 2016 election. Washingtonian: "Eaton DC’s progressive concept is the brainchild of Katherine Lo, whose father, Lo Ka Shui, is the billionaire founder of a Hong Kong real-estate empire and the Langham hotel chain. The hotel—on K street near Franklin Square—is the first U.S. outpost of the fledgling Eaton brand. Lo is mostly based in California, but she’s been living in Shaw as she puts the finishing touches on the Eaton’s in-house radio station, Tim Ma restaurant, and music venue. The hotel will sponsor lectures, offer 'wellness activations,' and, she hopes, serve as an incongruously luxe gathering spot for the 'grassroots people of DC.' The idea has been greeted with cynicism in some quarters: Isn’t this just an eight-story, 209-room attempt to monetize the resistance? But Lo is counting on skeptics coming around once it opens. 'Certain people think we’re just a hotel that wants to make money and all the rest is gimmicks or marketing,' she says. 'But we are really passionate about these values.' ... Everyone is welcome, she insists, before adding: 'Maybe not hate groups.' Did she think about scaling back the liberal signifiers after Trump’s election and the ensuing culture-war escalation? 'It was actually like, wow, we should amp it up,' she says." https://bit.ly/2N6u8ub
