The New York Chapter for the American Institute of Architects and the New York Foundation for Architecture's Center for Architecture held a benefit cocktail party at the Guggenheim Museum in honor of architect Philip Johnson and real estate developer Gerald Hines' 30-year collaboration. Hines and Johnson worked together on 13 buildings, 10 of which were displayed as ice sculptures by master ice sculptor Steve Rose of Ice Effects.
The celebrated architect was also toasted in celebration of his 95th birthday this month. The biggest names in architecture turned out for the event, including Frank Gehry (whose work is the subject of a current Guggenheim exhibit), Richard Meier, I. M. Pei, Robert A. M. Stern and David Rockwell.
Following a discussion moderated by Johnson biographer Hilary Lewis and A. Eugene Kohn, president of architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox, guests and journalists were ushered into the atrium of the Guggenheim for the cocktail party portion of the event. The Guggenheim's stark white atrium was decorated with some bright yellow flower arrangements contained in Plexiglas boxes with Hines and Johnson's names on the front by Susan Edgar Design.
