Harlem's Blue Party at Tavern on the Green

August 21, 2001
Tavern on the Green was jumping last Wednesday. The legendary Central Park venue played host to Harlem Bleu, the 27th anniversary celebration of Harlem Week and the Harlem Jazz and Music Festival, co-sponsored by Vibe magazine, Martell Cognac and J Records. (Oddly enough, the event wasn't held in Harlem.) This is the latest of a few events we've seen--Bill Clinton's new office party among them--that celebrated Manhattan's latest hot-again neighborhood. And it was one of at least two events that were going on at the same time in the legendary labyrinthian restaurant--Jennifer LeRoy must be doing something right.
Blue was also the theme of the evening (the invite warned wearing any shade of blue was "a must"), so the room was washed in cool shades of blue, green and purple light. The Tavern carved a simple ice sculpture of the Martell Cognac bottle to decorate the buffet table covered with meats, pastas, crudites, cheeses and breads that was expeditiously replenished by the Tavern staff, who hurried in and out of one of the kitchens with more and more food. Guests were offered special "Martell Metropolitans" (at least they weren't called "Martell-tinis"--it always seems to be something-tini) from the co-sponsoring cognac company.

DJ Luis Diaz of Cipha Sounds spun mostly hip-hop music for the crowd, and J Records' R&B recording artist Jimmy Cozier later performed for the crowd of mostly Vibe advertisers and Martell clients.
