Since its 2001 launch party set the precedent, Gotham magazine and its sister pubs L.A. Confidential and Hamptons have been known for star-filled fetes. For the magazine's third anniversary this year, the magazine's promotions and marketing director Elizabeth Riordan and manager Joanna Tucker put together a bash that continued the tradition. A parade of celebrities—including Ethan Hawke and hostess Kim Cattrall—marched into Gotham Hall on the red carpet, where Full Picture PR reps and Assured Protection security guards did their best to maintain order among the jostling throng of photographers and reporters.
As if former bank space Gotham Hall isn't baroque enough on a typical night, Tentation design director Keiko Sato created a prominent centerpiece in the middle of the dance floor for an even more impactful milieu. Working with a Sex and the City theme that tied in naturally with Cattrall's role as hostess, Tentation erected a sultry gazebo dripping with tapestries in rich purples and reds. Sequined and mirrored throw pillows on plush benches surrounded a raised platform that supported a bed (a similar set-up to the 2001 Sex and the City season premiere party). Crystal-accented candelabras and vases of dark tulips completed the sexy look. "Kim Cattrall isn't just about sex. She also embodies sleekness and elegance," Sato said. "That's the look we were going for."
Pillar candles wrapped with Gotham and Tentation branding illuminated bars and tabletops around the main dance floor. Upstairs in the V.I.P. lounge, A-list celebrity guests (including even hot-again Donald Trump, who missed the big-deal Time Warner Center gala opening the previous night) looked their best under the flattering light of amber votives suspended like acorns from the branches of tree sculptures.
Legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex spun a mix of mostly hip-hop and R&B classics (think Bell Biv DeVoe) for the few revelers who preferred dancing over dining on Tentation's eclectic catering selections, which included a somewhat foreboding pasta dyed black with squid ink as well as a bouillabaisse. (At the Council of Protocol Executives conference at the Mandarin Oriental the following day, Myriad Restaurant Group's Drew Nieporent said he was impressed by the soup as an inspired and ambitious choice for an event, although he found it a bit salty. Picky, picky.)
