1. Sugar Couture's Penny Stankiewicz offers custom designs and more than 500 cake and buttercream combinations, including lemon-ginger cake with passion fruit buttercream and banana cake with cashew cream. Stankiewicz has created birthday cakes for celebrities such as Tony Bennett, Betsey Johnson, and Hugh Jackman, as well as for movie premieres and other corporate events. Cakes typically have a six-week lead-time and pricing starts at $8 a slice.
2. After working at Confetti Cakes and LovinSullivan Cakes, Liz Shim opened Eat Cake Be Merry last year. Shim specializes in custom cakes, as well as cookies and cupcakes, for corporate events, birthdays, baby showers, and other occasions. Shim's designs have a clean, modern look, and many are adorned with hand-crafted flowers and other details. Cakes start around $300, and Shim requires at least three weeks' notice. Delivery is available throughout metro New York and New Jersey.
3. Mark Randazzo of Mark Joseph Cakes worked at Lespinasse, Fauchon, and Confetti Cakes before opening his own business, which offers custom-designed, sculpted cakes and cupcakes. Randazzo has crafted robots, alligators, and sports cars out of cake, but more traditional shapes are also available. Flavors include Valrhona chocolate, Sicilian pistachio, and mocha. Cupcakes range from $5 to $7 each, and cakes are $8 to $18 per serving. Delivery is available throughout the tri-state area.
