* INCOMING *
1. BETTING ON BET: Yesterday, while promoting its new television lineup during an upfront presentation in New York, the cable network announced it will expand the BET Awards. Dubbed the "BET Awards Experience," next year's event will include an interactive, multiplatform three-day takeover of the L.A. Live complex. Press release: http://on.mktw.net/I2yutv
2. LEAVING VEGAS: Las Vegas officials don't want to see the city blamed for the G.S.A. scandal. L.A. Times: "In recent days, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has said publicly that she doesn't want her city to be used as any scapegoat by Washington insiders who might seek to portray Lady Luck as some siren luring unsuspecting bureaucrats to their fiscal doom." http://lat.ms/JapfJh
3. AHEAD OF THE CURVE: A new unit at NBC Universal, Curve Films, is tasked with finding "new, more interesting ways to deliver materials like research data to advertising and media agencies and marketers," The New York Times reports. Examples include delivering a coffee-table-style book on trends in consumer culture and a documentary-style film on Generation Y. http://nyti.ms/J3VP0t
4. QUESTIONING DIGITAL: Social media experts shared tips on building social personality at the Ad Age Digital Conference in New York, which included offering digital followers a mix of selling and nonselling messages. However, in a presentation titled "Digital Is Dead," Gap's chief marketing officer, Seth Farbman, argued that "brands shouldn't think of digital as something they must do to stay relevant." adage.com/article...
5. E-ADS GROWING: Nevertheless, the Interactive Advertising Bureau reported Internet advertising reached a record $31 billion last year, with mobile and digital video advertising growing the fastest and retail advertisers representing the largest segment of buyers. Los Angeles Times: http://lat.ms/HSmHQP
6. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT? Communal tables may be the latest fad for restaurants, but, according to the New York Post, some diners don't want their fine dining experience to be in such close quarters. "It's part of the relentless informalization of dining, which is a wonderful and a terrible thing," said the Post's restaurant critic, Steve Cuozzo. http://nyp.st/I5o5JE
