April 4, 2014: Jay Z’s Made in America Festival Hits Snag, Upfront Season Grows Crowded, Marc Jacobs Casts Campaign Through Hashtag

1. JAY Z’S MADE IN AMERICA FESTIVAL HITS SNAG: The rapper plans to bring his music festival to Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend, but a city official wants to delay approving the permits until he gets more information about the event. The festival, which is produced by Live Nation and sponsored by Budweiser, could draw as many as 50,000 people to downtown’s Grand Park. Los Angeles Times: "This is not about opposing special events or any particular concert, it's about making sure the affected community, in this case downtown stakeholders, is part of the planning process sooner rather than later,” City Councilman Jose Huizar said in a statement to the Times. http://lat.ms/1j9txjZ

2. UPFRONT SEASON GROWS CROWDED: One winner during the upfront season for media companies is the event industry, from venues to entertainment acts, as the season for the presentations stretches throughout April and May. The New York Times: “Each year, the list of upfront presentations—where advertisers and agencies are courted with upbeat remarks, tasty food, potent drinks, musical acts and nice gifts—grows longer, for several reasons. Some media companies are selling commercial time on new cable channels while others are seeking additional ad revenue by increasing the amount of original programming they offer viewers. And many technology companies hope to break into the ranks of publishers as they seek sponsors for online video content.” http://nyti.ms/1gtbX6e

3. MARC JACOBS CASTS CAMPAIGN THROUGH HASHTAG: Using the hashtag #CastMeMarc, Marc by Marc Jacobs is seeking the face of its fall 2014 campaign through social media. New York: “Considering Marc Jacobs's marketing track record—from Victoria Beckham's dangling legs in a shopping bag to controversial brand ambassadors Miley Cyrus and 64-year-old Jessica Lange—the mining-social-media tactic comes as no surprise.” http://thecut.io/1hnm1xJ
