EMMYS DELIVERS COMPETENT BUT SAFE SHOW: Monday night’s Primetime Emmy Awards provided few surprises, awarding prizes to many previous winners and host Seth Meyers steering the ship without making too many waves. (Although the less said about Weird Al’s theme song medley, the better.) Variety: “More practically speaking, NBC’s latest use of the Emmys to showcase a latenight (or really, later-night) host worked out reasonably well. Meyers adopted a minimalist approach to open the show, delivering a straight stand-up routine aimed at the TV-literate crowd—both in the room and at home—that resembled some of the better Oscar intros of years past. 2. SAMSUNG CRITICIZED FOR ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE AD: TechCrunch and PRNewser took issue with a recent online ad from Samsung in which its Galaxy S5 smartphone is depicted as taking the ALS ice bucket challenge, a viral fund-raising stunt for the deadly disease. Samsung noted that it made a donation to the cause, but the marketing stunt left a bad impression. PRNewser: “Co-opting a charity movement to promote a specific product over a competitor’s extremely similar product? That is the worst possible way to make use of the meme. 3. WOULD YOU EAT DINNER IN A DUMPSTER?: Only in Brooklyn would you see a charity dinner held in a Dumpster. The “Salvage Supperclub” is a chef-prepared, multicourse meal made from food waste from local restaurants, farmers' markets, farms, and homes, served in a modified (and cleaned) trash hauler. Wall Street Journal: “A group of 16 adventurous foodies stepped into the dumpster, donated by a waste management company, along St. Marks Avenue in Brooklyn Thursday and seated themselves alongside fresh planks of lumber from Home Depot. … Attendees paid $50 for the six-course meal, with profits going to City Harvest, an organization that rescues food and gives it to those in need.” http://bit.ly/VIYTH1
