1. THE HIGH STAKES OF THE VICTORIA'S SECRET FASHION SHOW: The combined earning power of the models on the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which taped Tuesday night, is about $50 million a year, according to an analysis by Forbes. The event, which marked its 20th year and will be broadcast on CBS December 10, is “the most lucrative gig in fashion.” Forbes: “The exposure generated by the fashion show, which [Victoria’s Secret C.M.O. Ed] Razek says is watched more than all other fashion shows combined, gives its models a gravitas they can translate into other lucrative contracts. In an industry where having a multimillion Instagram follower count can give models extra bargaining power, publicity is everything.” http://onforb.es/1OCgycZ
2. OSCAR CAMPAIGN EVENTS REACH FEVER PITCH: Promotional events for movies vying for Academy Awards are nothing new, but industry insiders are increasingly using the Governors Awards ceremony as a catalyst for their calendar. A slew of parties will take place around the November 14 event, taking advantage of the number of people coming to town for the awards. The Hollywood Reporter: “Campaigning is reaching a crescendo around the Academy's annual Governors Awards ceremony Nov. 14. The event ostensibly is about the industry icons it honors, but it also has become a key campaign stop for Oscar hopefuls. Distributors buy tables and fill them with contenders, knowing that few other events will generate as much media coverage—or provide as many opportunities to schmooze voters. 'It's become not just one event but a whole weekend of activity,' notes Cynthia Swartz of Strategy PR, who is representing The Revenant, Steve Jobs and Beasts of No Nation, among other films.” http://bit.ly/1Quvdq3
3. INTERNET GIANT ALIBABA TURNS SHOPPING EVENT INTO VARIETY SHOW: Hollywood stars like Daniel Craig and Kevin Spacey along with singer Adam Lambert and a slew of Chinese stars entertained crowds in a variety program all designed to promote Singles’ Day—November 11 or Double 11. The programming helped generate $3.9 billion in sales in the first hour alone, and drew participating brands such as Procter & Gamble, Apple, and Nike. Advertising Age: “There are a few possible reasons Alibaba tied the shopping event to a televised show. It reaches Chinese consumers who are not yet shopping online. It reminds people of Alibaba's reach into entertainment; just last week the company said it was buying all of video platform Youku Tudou. It creates advertising opportunities. Western brands including Columbia, Levi's, Budweiser and Corona bought ad time during the show. And it kept people up until midnight, when the sales begin.” http://bit.ly/1OCDRmM
4. JOHNSONVILLE AND UBER TEAM UP WITH GRANDMAS IN NEW PROMOTION: Johnsonville and Uber signed up a trio of Italian grandmas to deliver sausages to consumers in Chicago, traveling in three kitschy kitchens. Adweek: “The sausage maker teamed up with Uber for the ‘Sausage Nonnas’ stunt, which featured the Italian grandmas—known as ‘nonnas’—delivering free homemade sausage meals to Chicagoans who requested delivery through the Uber app. Users could select a "Nonnas" option on the Uber home screen and track their delivery as the tiny house icon neared.” http://bit.ly/1kKzWaE
