November 12, 2018: Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Struggles to Evolve, People's Choice Awards Presenters and Winners Address California Wildfires, Alibaba Sets Record $31 Billion in Sales For Annual Shopping Festival

1. VICTORIA'S SECRET FASHION SHOW STRUGGLES TO EVOLVE: Victoria's Secret is a brand that knows times are changing in terms of the representation of women in the lingerie industry. But the latest Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which took place in New York last Thursday, shows that the brand isn't necessarily putting progressive growth as a priority. The New York Times: "So it began that show, which took place Thursday night on Pier 94 on the Far West Side of New York, with a video featuring some of its most famous models talking about how doing the show made them feel 'successful,' 'powerful,' 'empowered,' 'strong.' About how 'we can be sexy for ourselves and who we want to be, not who a man wants us to be.' It even set the opening lineup to the song 'This is Me' from The Greatest Showman, performed by the soul singer Leela James. And then came the undies. And the wings. And the diamantĂ© body suits. The feathers. There was a floral section guest-designed by Mary Katrantzou, a London Fashion Week regular. (And a woman! See! Women like VS!) That section featured some wrap-waist cargo pants that looked suspiciously like … clothes. But that didn’t last long. The models mugged for the camera (the show will be broadcast by ABC on December 2); blew kisses, waggled their booty, drew hearts in the air, and waved their hands around in an attempt to get the audience to cheer. Adam Levine, in the front row with some friends to support his wife, Behati Prinsloo, obliged by standing up and shouting every time she came down the runway. During a lull between sets—there were seven 'themes,' including Golden Angle and Celestial Angel, and Downtown Angel—a voice-over reminded the crowd that VS was the only show that gave tickets to the models so they could invite their families. It also rolled out some stats: 1.6 billion people viewed the show last year, of which 70 percent were women. It had 220 billion press and social media impressions." https://nyti.ms/2JXajBz

2. PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS PRESENTERS AND WINNERS ADDRESS CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES: Stars including Mila Kunis, Kim Kardashian, and Melissa McCarthy addressed the wildfires in Southern California at the People's Choice Awards, which took place Sunday at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Presenters and winners urged people to donate to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. The Hollywood Reporter: "Melissa McCarthy encouraged viewers to help those affected by the fires while accepting the inaugural icon award. 'I'm so incredibly grateful that tonight your collective voice matters,' she said. 'If you could just do one more thing with your power, because when people come together there's such incredible power in it, please, keep the victims, volunteers and firefighters in your thoughts.' 'Any contributions to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation—$1, $10, 50 cents—it will be put to good use and it will make a difference,' she continued. 'There is great power in this room and everyone who's watching.' The Kardashian family spent the majority of their acceptance speech for best reality show discussing the wildfires. 'It's been a really rough week in our home in Calabasas, Hidden Hills and our neighbors in Thousand Oaks and Malibu,' began Kim Kardashian, who also mentioned the recent shooting in Thousand Oaks. 'Our hearts are broken from the horrific shootings and those who have lost their lives and homes, as well as the hundreds of thousands of us that have been evacuated from the devastating fires that are currently burning.' ... Danai Gurira used the acceptance speech for Avengers: Infinity War's win in the best movie category to address those impacted by the fires. 'We want to take the moment to dedicate this to the great state of California. The devastation and the turmoil that we are going through right now, that people are going through right now out there, we just want to say we are with you. Our prayers and our thoughts and our hearts are with you,' she said." https://bit.ly/2PYZMvi

3. ALIBABA SETS RECORD $31 BILLION IN SALES FOR ANNUAL SHOPPING FESTIVAL: E-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding set a record $30.7 billion in sales for its annual Single's Day shopping event. Advertising Age: "China's largest company, which used a televised entertainment spectacle featuring Cirque du Soleil and Mariah Carey to further drum up business, reported that Xiaomi Corp., Apple Inc., and Dyson Ltd. products were the top three brands in early sales. The final sales figure in Chinese yuan was about 27 percent higher than last year's. The annual retail celebration, originally dedicated to the nation's unattached, has become an important bellwether not just for the company, but also the country. This year's November 11 gala offers a glimpse of consumer sentiment in China as U.S. tensions and a tit-for-tat tariff war depress stock markets and threaten to dampen the world's No. 2 economy. The challenge for billionaire founder Jack Ma and Daniel Zhang, Alibaba's chief executive officer, was to notch another record after a scorching decade-long run. With a cooling economy, saturated markets, and competition from smaller platforms such as JD.com and Pinduoduo, Alibaba is seeking new growth engines. ... Singles' Day was the brainchild of co-founder Ma and Zhang, who came up with the idea of turning the counter-cultural holiday into a shopfest a decade ago. First popularized by college students, November 11 emerged as an antidote to the sentimentality of Valentine's Day. It takes its name from the way the day is written numerically as 11/11, which resembles 'bare branches,' a local expression for the unattached. Now, it's become an excuse for people to shop, eat, and binge on entertainment shows. It's become so enormous that packaging waste—Alibaba expects 1 billion packages to get shipped this year—and potential damage to the environment remain lingering issues." https://bit.ly/2RR4Xuy
