Special Event 2001: The Opening Party

The great thing about going to a party put together by event people is that no one is trying to showcase anything other than the party. There's no complicated software to figure out, no new magazine to read, no merchandise you can't spill on. When event planners put on a soiree, the party--and it's various parts--is the product.

The welcome party for the Special Event 2001 held to that rule. Sponsored by the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) the party was held at New Orleans' Aquarium of the Americas with a Chinese-inspired theme: "The Year of the Snake."

Costumed characters by Designs by Sean and air sculptures by Air Dimensional Design led the way from the hotel to the event location on a cold, blustery night in New Orleans. Inside the aquarium nearly 25 caterers and restaurants set up sampling stations. Every floor of the aquarium had food stations, entertainment and, of course, live fish floating in the background.

The event also included an inspired fireworks performance designed by David Spear of Classic Fireworks. Spear has done lots of fireworks shows in China, and he told us he brought elements of Chinese fireworks design to the work he did for this night.
