Special Event 2001: The Gala Awards

On the final night of the Special Event 2001, the gala awards ceremony celebrated the work of industry nominees from around the globe. Upon entering a white-draped atmosphere in the Hilton New Orleans Riverside for the cocktail hour, guests received small cards printed with meditation words. They then mingled among three meditation gardens constructed from sand, white shag carpeting and grass sod.

In keeping with the cocktail area's reflective mood, the main ballroom was decorated entirely in white and featured a canopy of white balloons and "U"- and "Z"-shaped tables covered in textured linens that varied from mohair to vinyl. The tables all had unique centerpieces, including light sculptures, elegant candle arrangements, and plant and flower displays.

Sam Cavell, Marie Long and Mary Vega of the Vega Group designed, planned and organized the gala, and two New York companies--Opening Nite Entertainment and Pink Inc.--provided the entertainment. Despite a mediocre meal catered by the hotel, guests enjoyed an ice-sculpted martini bar. Bartenders mixed drinks by pouring them down spiral funnels built of ice.

The evening's award-winners spanned the globe, with nominees from Australia, England and Canada winning 12 of the 32 categories. The lifetime achievement award went to Joe Goldblatt of George Washington University for his contributions to the industry.

After the celebration, guests lounged in an after-event room that featured two oversized, pillow-covered canopy beds decorated in hot pink, orange and purple.
