1. PHONE FASHION: Kicking off New York Fashion Week was an unlikely company: Samsung. New York Times: "The fashion designer Alexander Wang is joining forces with Samsung to create a new print based on doodles, sketches, and photographs that are being contributed via smartphone by some of the top names in fashion. … The electronics giant is walking in the footsteps of companies in other industries, like automakers that have allied with luxury-level fashion to distinguish themselves from rivals." http://nyti.ms/VKW2MF
2. SURVIVING FASHION WEEK: Here's one reporter's homage and guide to getting through the beautiful madness. New York Post: "Few moments are more exciting than when that first look hits the runway: models catwalking, glimpses of a new collection, the designer taking their final bow, innovative settings. What’s not to love about watching Marchesa gowns float through the halls of Grand Central Terminal, as happened during Fashion Week last fall?" http://bit.ly/14XEZbP
3. HIPPY HIPPY SHAKE: Who didn't love watching Tom Cruise whip around liquor bottles in the movie Cocktail? While the glitzy bartender performances fell out of fashion with the rise of the mixology movement, it may be making a comeback. New York's Grub Street blog: "There’s evidence on the industry end that a national flair resurgence is nigh: In 2010, [Flair Bartenders' Association founder Tobin] Ellis led a seminar about the importance of flair, called 'The F Word,' at influential New Orleans mixology summit Tales of the Cocktail. And last October, a pop-up flair competition unfolded at Portland Cocktail Week. … The future of flair may rest in how well it can mix with serious mixology and whether the grandstanding tradition can escape its cheesy pre-aughts associations." http://bit.ly/11snvp1
4. MAPLE MIXTURE: Canadians have developed a new beverage: maple water. The natural product, promoted by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, is said to have a "fresh and delicately sweet flavour,” and will be marketed under three brands: Seva, Oviva, and Maple3.
