1. Desires Hotels opened a New York property in early July. Near Madison Square Park, the Mave—short for Madison Avenue—houses 72 rooms, all with bamboo flooring and dark mahogany furniture. A café offers indoor and outdoor seating.
2. The 200-room Jane Hotel partly opened in September 2008 and in June launched its lobby bar, which is available for events. Podlike guest rooms are furnished with bunk beds. The bar and lounge gets a bohemian look from Argentine tiles, a fireplace, and a salvaged disco ball.
3. The 247-room Ace Hotel, the first New York outpost of a Portland, Oregon-based property, opened in May and sports an eclectic look with vintage furnishings and custom artwork. The Ace offers a Stumptown coffee bar as well as the Breslin, a restaurant from chef April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman of the Spotted Pig. The 3,000-square-foot Liberty Hall can host parties for 200.
4. Owned by the London-based Firmdale Hotels, the 86-room Crosby Street Hotel opened in early October with a floor dedicated to events and meetings. Beneath the lobby are a reception area, a 99-seat screening room, and three private function rooms, the largest of which holds 100 for receptions.
