Kurt Perschke's RedBall Project, a site-specific installation that involves a 15-foot, inflatable red ball set against various urban backdrops, has traveled through cities like Barcelona and Sydney, and next Monday it will take up residence in Chicago. The traveling exhibition, sponsored by Target, is billed as a sculptural performance, with the giant red orb popping up at 15 different city sites, ranging from iconic (Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center) to obscure (various alleys and bridges). Perschke has said that the essence of his project lies in the interaction between the ball and the viewer. By witnessing an unfamiliar object in familiar spaces, those who encounter the piece become participants in the work, giving new context to their surroundings. The installations continue through September 25.
